Comfort

Yesterday was not my favorite. It was just one of those no-good, rotten, stinking kind of days. For the first time since starting this job, I had a bad day at work. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’ve had plenty of not-good days at work. There have been many days when I’ve been tired, cranky, stressed, or just bored, but overall I wouldn’t really consider them BAD days. Well, yesterday ended up being a bad day. And all I wanted to do when I got home (which took me twice as long as normal thanks to a lovely accident on Route 50) was buy out a store’s entire supply of Cadbury Creme Eggs and lapse into a sugar-induced coma.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you see it), that didn’t happen. I made it as far as the CVS parking lot before mentally slapping myself across the face and coming to my senses. Instead of binge eating 1500 calories worth of fondant-filled chocolate, I simply whined to Sean about my le terrible day (he’s so lucky to have me, haha) and went about my business as usual. I went to the bank. I got my oil changed. I got my nails did.

Just call me Whasian Barbie.

And after all that, I indulged in a much less destructive way: with Thai food and puppies. (Schnauzers are good for the soul, I tell you!) And so another day is gone where I am reassured of how far I’ve come. I may not be making much progress on the general weight loss front lately (womp womp), but at least you can’t say I haven’t made personal progress in the past year.

  1. Sorry your day was so sucky! Good job on the progress you’ve made in the last year! I love the nail color! And whenever you’re feeling down this weekend, think about how awesome you did on your race this weekend! It’s working for me!

  2. Katesays:

No one likes a bad day, no matter how rare they are. Glad it ended well. And loving the nails.

  3. “… or not. Okay.”. Puppies make everything better. 🙂

  4. Just reading that you had a bad day puts that Daniel Powter song in my head… ahhh! Sorry your Monday wasn’t fun, but good for you for dealing with it in a positive way! Puppies definitely help- it’s kind of impossible to be in a bad mood with them in your life. And having a boyfriend that will listen to you when you need to just complain for a while is a great thing. Sounds like Sean the Fox is a keeper. 😉

    • I’m not going to lie, that song was stuck in my head for a large part of yesterday too, and it probably contributed to my sour mood, hahahaha.

  5. I agree! Venting and animals are a winning combination for the sould (except pigeons… pigeons are the worst).
It’s so great to see that you are able to break your bad habits and maintain a healthy relationship with food. W00t!

Dog sneezes are the funniest thing in the world! My dogs sneeze so hard I am waiting for them to at least fall backwards if not shoot across the room. 😛 Dogs make everything better!

  7. I’m sorry you had a bad day at work but good for you for not using food as the remedy!

I love the color you chose for your nails!

  8. They also get to see how ghetto and ugly our back yard is, haha

  9. Dogs are good for the soul and can often help a bad day! I’m proud of you for walking away from CVS…Cadbury eggs are a downfall of mine too and soooo tempting. Here’s hoping today goes better!

  10. Katesays:

Good for you for resisting the urge to binge! I should be doing better with that lately–it’s so hard when work is stressful and you feel low-energy. You should be super proud of yourself!

  11. Good for you girly! Little successes are the best!

  12. Jen Robinsonsays:

I’m proud of you for avoiding destructive behavior and getting a manicure instead! nice spring colour too btw! and doggies definitely help- seriously, how did we survive so long without them??

  13. Lisa Nidasays:

Manicures and puppies seem so much better than food. 🙂 Babies can cheer one up as well!

  14. Do you not drink? White wine and Thai food go well together! :-p

All jokes aside…I’m sorry you had a bad day. Yet I’m proud of you for making healthier choices by nurturing yourself, playing with the dogs, and writing. Hoping better days are to come!

Love the nail colour – and the fact that you resisted the binge 🙂 Cheers for a better day today!

  16. Juliesays:

Love, love, love your manicure! The color is awesome! Hope your day is better!

  17. Sorry you had such a bad day, but good on your for not giving in to a self-destructive binge! I had a crappy day yesterday too, but instead of drinking a whole bottle of wine (wine is my chocolate – super healthy, right?) I ran my stress and anger out.

…And *then* I had a glass of wine.

I found your blog. I read it daily. I have to say you are a great inspiration to me. You are real, you make mistakes and succeed just as well. You keep my sllllllllllooooooooooooowwwwww weight loss in good spirits as I make mistakes and have successes as well. I love puppies 🙂 Thank you!

    • Oh gosh, thank you so much, Lisa! I’m so flattered. 🙂 You and I are in this slow weight loss game together! 😀

      • Lisasays:

Well, the more I have read your blog the more I realized to be healthy and sane it is a slow process. I have lost 50lbs and have gained some back and lost and gained…so now I am working at the losing part.

We all make mistakes, we all have our good and bad days, and now that we have two puppies it makes my exercise routine a MUST not an option anymore 🙂

Keep up the good work and stalking you daily 🙂

        • Lisasays:

Oh btw, in a fun and inspiring way…not a “mental” stalking way!

  19. Way to hang in there Gretchen! Whenever I have a bad day and I give in to those sugar-induced-coma urges, I’m even more mad at myself afterwards for doing it. Good for you for keeping on track!

  20. Girl, sometimes I feel like you are in my head! I had the worst weekend and literally stood in front of the candy isle at CVS for a good 5 minutes wrestling with whether or not to binge (I didn’t). It’s not always easy to remember that other people struggle with this kind of thing also – your courage in writing these posts continue to inspire me.

  21. Wow, that shows some serious progress! I think something like that is even a better sign of progress than the number on the scale. Great job – chocolate just seems so much more tempting after a bad day.

  22. Great self-control! I LOLd @ your mental slap to the face 😉 WTG!

Your nails look awesome and I hope that today is 10000000x better than yesterday!
