No Beard, No Problem!

I have a lot of breed loyalty for the miniature schnauzer (um, duh), and one of the things I love most is that they don’t shed. This means less vacuuming for me (huzzah!) and fewer allergic reactions for everyone else (double huzzah!) Their hair just grows and grows, like people hair! That does mean, however, that grooming can get rather tedious. Also just like people, my puppers require regular haircuts to keep their fuzz from getting totally out of control.

The bad part is that a trip to the groomer can cost anywhere from $60 to $100 PER dog! So, in seeking out another alternative, you may already be aware of the fact that I occasionally take Harry & Daxter’s grooming into my own hands. While in the beginning this had borderline disastrous effects

…I’ve actually gotten fairly decent at it lately!

This time, though, I wanted to try something different. Something that my mom probably won’t actually be too happy about, since she’s kind of obsessed with Harry’s beard. Good thing hair always grows back, on schnauzers and humans alike, eh?

Presenting… the beardless(ish) schnauzers! I chopped off their beards so now they’re both left with what’s more like the schnauzer equivalent of 5 o’clock shadow. Daxter’s actually had his beard almost this short in the past (kind of), but this is a first for Harry. I actually think it makes them look really sweet!

Ben, however, thinks it makes them look like rats. I feel like it makes Daxter look more like a puppy again, and makes Harry look a lot younger, too. Of course, he’ll always be a crotchety old man in spirit (and personality) anyway, so there’s only so much that a haircut can do, ahahaha.

I’m not sure how the two of them feel about their new haircuts though. Eating and drinking is already a much better experience for me, since less food is getting stuck in their beards and less water drippage is occurring, but they both seemed a little gloomy while I was taking these photos of them.

Perhaps that’s just because they’re totally sick of having cameras shoved into their faces. And to be fair, they were a little on the sleepy side too.

I rest my case.

Anyway, I think it’s pretty stinkin’ adorable, but we’ll see whether or not this becomes the norm. At least I have the adorableness for now! And through me, you have it as well. You’re welcome. 😉

Also I can’t stop loling about that first-grooming-attempt picture. That’s sort of how Jonathan looks when he forgets to get a haircut and has to buzz his own head.

  2. So stinkin’ adorable!!!! Question- How do your dogs do being home all day? Or do they have someone to take them out midday? I am building a case to get a dog and just wondering how you do with working all day.

    • So I’m actually pretty lucky because with my brother’s job and schedule (he’s a music teacher and photographer, so he’s home a lot of the day) they’re rarely left alone for more than a couple hours at a time.

Once I’m no longer living with Ben, though, I’m sure I’ll have to come up with something else. They’re totally capable of being left alone for 8+ hours (like, they can “hold it” for that long if necessary), they just really don’t like it (and when Daxter gets annoyed, he gets destructive). But I also think it helps that they have each other to keep one another company.

My sister has just one dog right now and takes him to doggy daycare a couple of days a week, so maybe that would be an option? Or hiring a mid-day dogwalker is definitely a popular thing to do, too. Around here, doggy daycare is like $25 – $35 a day, I think, and hiring a dogwalker is probably like $10 – $20 per day depending on how long the walks are for. I would almost certainly do one or the other if I had to leave them home alone all day long.

  3. ahhh so cute! i dont know if im brave enough to give Mwaji her haircut. haha

  4. Totally random, but how did you pick Daxter’s name?

    • So, the short story is that there’s a video game out there called Jak & Daxter. The long story is that I kind of… didn’t really tell my brother I was getting a new puppy, and we had juuuuust bought our house together. So in order to soften the “surprise! we have an adorable new puppy who is going to chew all your ish and whine all the time!” factor, I let Ben name him. And so it all comes back around to the video game. 😛

I think it’s super cute, actually, since it’s so unique. Most people think it’s either “Baxter” or “Dexter” though!

      • AHHHH I knew it! I was just playing that video game last night (for the first time in years and years)and then read your blog. I didn’t want to ask out right if that was what the name was from in case you had no idea what I was talking about. Hahaha what a coincidence!

  5. The beard water-dripping is seriously the worst. Puppyface will go get a drink, come up and nuzzle my legs and get her nasty ladybeard water all up and over me. And now that we have hardwood floors, we are constantly wiping up ladybeard drippings (which we never noticed on the carpet).

  6. Gretchen, I am in love with your dogs and still sad I haven’t met them in person yet!!!! So freaking adorable. I really want to dog nap them and play/cuddle all day. Too stinkin’ cute!

  7. How cute! I adopted a Schauzer Mini Yorkie-Poo yesterday and he is adorable! Mine looks a lot like your white one except has a bit more weight 🙂 I love the hair cut! I’m excited to take mine to the groomers 🙂
