(Temporary) Freedom

I wasn’t really sure how I was supposed to follow up yesterday’s trifecta of awesome. After all, having a hallelujah-Monday that consisted of entering a new decade of weight loss, a career move AND a new haircut (not necessarily in that order of importance) is hard to do!

And then I woke up to a vomiting dog and menstrual cramps (sorry to my 4.2 male readers, haha) and realized that maybe I’m not supposed to try to outdo it. But, while I may not be starting off this day with quite the same pizazz as yesterday, it is still a day where I got to sleep in until 9 AM (that is late for me these days!) because I’m taking some “me time” before starting my new job. Partly by choice, and partly because my new job’s start date is affected by the current government furlough of the FAA. Sooooo… it may end up being a little MORE me time than originally planned. Oh well. I love me so, it’ll be okay. Just a good life lesson in frugality over the next month perhaps.

Another good thing? I had an awesome bowl of overnight oats waiting for me in the fridge this morning (raw oats, chia seeds, coconut, almond milk, empty — sob — jar of Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter.) So, all is not lost.

Plus, the sister and her hubs took Ben, Taylor and me out for sushi (what else?) last night to thank us for puppysitting this past week! Everybody’s a winner!

Day 211 - Puppy Handling
Photos by Ben Powell

Pre-sushi, Ben and I attempted to take some photos of Oreo for my sister while he’s still in his supercute puppy phase. Unfortunately, being in his supercute puppy phase means he is a terrible photography subject. He doesn’t know how to “stay” yet, so it was basically 20 minutes of me wrestling him into place and then trying to jump out of the picture as quickly as possible. So it was kind of impossible to get any decent shots of the three dogs together, but he did get some pretty great ones of Oreo on his own (after editing my limbs out of the pictures, haha.) Observe!

Sufficiently pick-me-uppish? 😉

Don’t worry, I have plans to actually be productive during my days of (temporary) freedom — including that post on blogging that I’ve been promising for a while now!

Celebrate! (Weigh-in)

(Good times, come on!)

Yes, that’s right Friends. (HA! Get it?) We have some celebrating to do today! First things first, in case you didn’t see my multitude of tweets and facebook status updates regarding my trip to the hair salon this weekend…

Before:

Yes, the most recent picture I have with my hair down is from the Harry Potter midnight premiere. I’m okay with it.

After:
IMG_0406.jpgIMG_0410.jpgHaircut!

IMG_0408.jpg

Ahhhhhh!

Like a sheep, I have been shorn. The hair is gone! It’s definitely taking some getting used to (washing my hair felt sooooo weird!) but I’m kinda digging it — I feel very chic and modern! I feel like a super trendy mix of Keira Knightley, Agyness Deyn, and The Beibs. Which is fitting, since I am obviously as or more attractive as all of these people combined, duh.

So you guys can let me know whether the haircut is worth including as part of the celebration, kay? And, you know, if you don’t like it… well, we’ve already discussed that I’m not exactly built to handle criticism well. So. You know. Just bear that in mind. Heh. *Insecurity alert!*

I took my new ‘do out on the town Saturday night with the fam and my friend Lara to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center!

It was my second time seeing the show and it was fantastic, although I still missed seeing Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth take the stage (I was lucky enough to see the show with the original cast before it even hit Broadway in San Francisco 8 years ago!) Such a fun evening.

The next part of today’s celebratory, er, celebration has to do with this week’s weigh-in! I think you can assume that it’s good news given the general nature of this post, but let’s check the statistics just to be sure, shall we?

Starting Weight: 246 lbs
Last Week’s Weight: 190.0 lbs
This Week’s Weight: 189.6 lbs
This Week’s Loss: -0.4 lbs

I AM IN THE 180s! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Yes, granted, it’s not the world’s best weigh-in, considering I didn’t even lose a full 1/2 pound, but you know what? I don’t care! It’s the bump that I needed to bring me out of the 190s after (I’m almost ashamed to admit it) 5 months of zigging, zagging, and bouncing up and down. I’m in a brand new decade! And for the first time in, um, ever? I feel like I’m really getting to a, well, “normal” weight. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m still not “done”, but it’s just that being able to say you weigh 180-something feels just so, regular. I know I’m still overweight but I’m really getting there! Whoo-hoo!

Which brings us to our final piece of celebratory news (this is quite the announcement-ridden Monday, isn’t it?), which is actually quite bittersweet: today is my last day of work at my current job! I’ll be starting a new job in DC (scary!) soon, and while I’m obviously very excited about it, I’m also super sad to be leaving my current coworkers and friends behind. But I do feel it’s the right choice for me at this stage in my career and I’m looking forward to the new opportunity! Working in the city will be a big adjustment for me, but I think it’ll be a good one. Time for me to take my new grown-up haircut and, you know, grow up! Plus walking to the metro is sure to at least guarantee me a modicum of exercise each day, eh?

Huzzahs all around: haircuts, career moves, and weight loss – oh my! What are you celebrating today?

Feelgood Friday: It’s my blog and I’ll post what I want to

Naturally, today’s blog title is meant to be sung to the tune of one particularly famous Cyndi Lauper song (in your head if you’re a normal person, out loud as you type it if you’re me.) Heh.

So I could spend this post detailing out the nutritional black hole that was my day yesterday (bagel & cream cheese for breakky, chicken wrap & chips for lunch, food court Japanese bento box for dins if you were wondering) and how Harry Potter really was just as good the fourth time around. Or I could spend this post talking about how I clearly had forgotten what it is like to have a puppy in your home (though I maintain that Daxter was never this much work. My brother disagrees.) All I know is that you owe me big time, sister dearest.

Cousins.
So cute. So. Much. Energy.

Instead, I’m going to do this 5 Things post that Laura tagged me in. Yes, I realize that I literally just did one of these kinda things with my 7 Links post, but hey, it seemed to get a good response from you guys! Plus, it’s Friday and maybe someone out there could use a pick-me-up on this incredibly humid morning (seriously. It’s like walking into a swamp. WTF DC?) And lastly, and you may have already caught onto this because you are so very clever and that’s why I love you, it’s my blog. I get to post what I want to. Heehee.

Five source

So the idea is that I post five things that I love about myself (it’s hard to narrow it down that much, I know. HA!) They can be physical (toned arms!), mental (brilliant at math), emotional (supportive), totally random (makes perfectly symmetrical pankcakes) or anything else. Then I tag five other bloggers to do the same. Then you all reflect and comment on something that you love about yourself! And then we all bask in the glow of self-confidence and mutual acceptance (hence the whole “Feelgood Friday” thing.) And we kick off the weekend the right way. Sounds good? I think it sounds good.

Gretchen’s 5:

Big Sand Bucket

1. I love my sense of humor. I know that some of you might not agree (what sense of humor?) but I think I’m funny, dammit! After all, “if you can’t laugh at yourself, life’s going to seem a whole lot longer than you’d like.” (Garden State)

2. I actually kind of love that I’m such an emotional person. I mean, I know that most people wouldn’t really consider this to be a great trait, considering that I cry at the drop of a hat and have the thinnest skin ever (never be mean to me, k guys? Hahaha.) but it’s really something I’m trying to embrace. I’m a sensitive person. As much as I’ve tried in the past, this is something that I am never going to be able to change. And I’m finally realizing that I might not want to. Being this way is how I’ve gotten a lot of my strengths: empathy, honesty, and fiercely caring for my friends & family. But it also forces me to try to overcome some of my weaknesses, like being overly sensitive, defensive, and inappropriately emotional (hello crying at work!) I’m a work in progress, what can I say?

3. Let’s get vain: I love my eyes. They’re the most Asian part of me (perhaps the only Asian part of me — thanks DAD.) and so sue me, I think they’re pretty. Almond-shaped, deep-brown, small and evenly set.

4. Let’s get vainer (is that a word?): I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been kinda digging my legs lately. This is NEVER something I would have been able to say a year ago. I used to avoid shorts like the plague, but I’m definitely coming around to them. Okay, so maybe what I lack in Asianness, I get to make up for in long leggedness (thanks Dad!)

IMG_9217.jpg

5. What else could this end with? I love that I’ve lost 56 pounds! I know I talk a lot about how I still have a ways to go, that I’m not at my goal yet, blahblahblah. While that is still true, I’m not done losing weight and I’m not at my “happy weight” or “healthy weight” or whatever-you-want-to-call-it weight yet, I think that sometimes I fixate so much on losing more than I forget to celebrate how much I’ve already lost, and how far I’ve already come.

So there you have it! So time for me to tag some others:

Jennifer @ A Knack for Nutrition
Erin @ The Part-Time Writer
Casey @ Hippie Health Nut
Bailey @ Bailey’s Belly Battle
Melissa @ The Journey to Marvelous

What do you love about yourself?

Birthdays in India

IMG_0373.jpg

Last night, the fam got together to celebrate birthdays a deux: my lovely and amazing sister, Jen, and her lovely and amazing hubby, Dan! Their birthdays are a mere 5 days apart (well, 5 days and a year) so we banged out both celebrations in one big family dinner at Haandi, a local Falls Church (what else?) Indian restaurant.

IMG_0396.jpg

Thanks for taking the pic, Taylor! It was a veritable smorgasbord of spicy, saucy, Indian goodness. Nommm.

IMG_0375.jpgIMG_0376.jpg

We started with an appetizer sampler plate (the samosas were huuuuge!) I always love the green tamarind-chutney-sauce-stuff (no idea what it’s called… help?)

IMG_0388.jpg

And the garlic naan was to DIE for. Hopefully the feast to come made for a very happy birthday couple:

IMG_0369.jpg

I know that my sister was just happy to receive the Oreo-lookalike (her new puppy) birthday cards!

IMG_0372.jpg

My brother was content to let me play the lone photographer for once, while he nursed this behemoth:

IMG_0370.jpg

Bahahaha.

IMG_0381.jpg

Saffron-ish rice, naturally, served as a base. And then… it began:

IMG_0383.jpg
IMG_0385.jpg
IMG_0387.jpg
IMG_0390.jpg

Oh my goodness. There was palak paneer (spinach with cheese cubes), lamb korma (lamb in a creamy sauce), chicken tikka masala, some kind of spicy eggplant coconut curry, and channa (chickpeas) masala that I must have forgotten to photograph in my haste to, you know, eat. Hehe.

My plate:

IMG_0392.jpg

Times like a thousand more pieces of naan to soak up all the curry goodness left in the bowls. Hehe. We were all so stuffed by the end of the meal, we couldn’t even bother with dessert. Ah well.

So speaking of Oreo, we’re puppysitting for my sis and her hubs while they go celebrate for REALS in Las Vegas this weekend! I’m so, so jealous. I haven’t been to LV since I was… 13? Not quite the experience I’m sure most of you have had in Sin City, ahahaha. So for me, this weekend will be a fast refresher of what puppy-ownership is like. Even though Daxter is only 1.5 years old, I’ve clearly already blocked some things out, haha! But it’s okay, because he’s so cute it all balances out in the end. I just hope my roommates see it that way, too… hehehe.

See?

Also, and I tell you this because I am all about full disclosure on this blog, I may or may not but definitely am going to see Harry Potter for a fourth time this afternoon. NO JUDGING. I’m just trying to keep the magic alive! 😀

Daily Eats – 7/22, 7/26 & 7/27/11

Yeah, I know. I’ve been a little inconsistent with the daily eats lately. So… I’m making up for it now. Kinda. This is a lotta eats (and doesn’t even include the weekend!)
