The Everyday Perils of Dog Ownership

Ahh, Monday.

Truly, nothing says “Welcome to the work week, biotch!” like being woken up by your dog puking on your carpet three times in the middle of the night. After he’s already made a onesie AND a twosie on your bathroom floor (but I do appreciate that he goes into the bathroom to do it, at least!). Yes, Daxter got me off to a grrrrreat start this week. Sigh.

My suspicion is that when Daxter gets sick like this it’s mostly anxiety-related. Which is kind of sad, because he has no real reason to be anxious. Ever. Seriously, between my brother’s and my work schedules, the dogs are left alone for maybe like, 3 hours a day — if at all! Not to mention they’re pretty much the most spoiled things ever. But between Daxter’s recent penchant for pooping on bathroom floors and Harry’s new allergy developments (he is so itchy ALL the time! I feel so bad for him. Anyone have any homeopathetic dog itch-relief remedies they want to share?), my little schnauzie-poos are definitely a handful right now.

Let me disclaim: I didn’t actually put Daxter in “jail” for puking. I just thought these pictures that Taylor took a few months ago were particularly apt.

As always, they are supremely lucky they’re so gosh-darned cute.

Anywayyyy, instead of dwelling on all of that literal mess, let’s look at some pretty pictures of sushi, shall we? I met up with my friend Amanda on Friday and we took a trip to my beloved Koi Koi. I actually had already had sushi earlier in the week, so I didn’t end up getting my usual sushi smorgasbord. Just a chicken katsu dish (which was so delicious I forgot to take a picture) and a little salmon roll on the side.

Plus edamame, duh.

Amanda Instagrammed her own deliciousness, so I took a photo of her taking a photo. I’m so meta.

I hope that you all had wonderful weekends! See you on the flipside. 🙂

Fashion Friday: Scratch

IMG_9436.jpg

So I think I probably jumped on this colored jeans trend about 3 months late, but hey, better late than never, right? I scored these teal skinnies online for almost half-off though, so I figured what have I got to lose?

IMG_9449.jpg

I actually think that these jeans would look awesome with some closed-toe pumps, but as I’m still recovering from Wednesday’s CrossFit session, I couldn’t quite stomach the idea. So t-strap flats it was!

Jeans: Dorothy Perkins
Shirt: Forever21
Tank (underneath): H&M
Shoes: Target
Watch: Fossil (similar, similar)
Flippin’ sweet mustache Necklace: Gift from my sister

This outfit, while being pretty standard weekend wear for me, actually had a very functional purpose. It was to partially hide the horrific scratch marks that Daxter left on my chest. Evidently he did not appreciate the way I scooped him up earlier.

Please ignore my super redface; it was like a zillion degrees.

He is lucky he’s so fracking cute, that’s all I gotta say.

Have a great weekend!

No Beard, No Problem!

I have a lot of breed loyalty for the miniature schnauzer (um, duh), and one of the things I love most is that they don’t shed. This means less vacuuming for me (huzzah!) and fewer allergic reactions for everyone else (double huzzah!) Their hair just grows and grows, like people hair! That does mean, however, that grooming can get rather tedious. Also just like people, my puppers require regular haircuts to keep their fuzz from getting totally out of control.

The bad part is that a trip to the groomer can cost anywhere from $60 to $100 PER dog! So, in seeking out another alternative, you may already be aware of the fact that I occasionally take Harry & Daxter’s grooming into my own hands. While in the beginning this had borderline disastrous effects

Whoops.

…I’ve actually gotten fairly decent at it lately!

This time, though, I wanted to try something different. Something that my mom probably won’t actually be too happy about, since she’s kind of obsessed with Harry’s beard. Good thing hair always grows back, on schnauzers and humans alike, eh?

IMG_9304.jpg
IMG_9290.jpg

Presenting… the beardless(ish) schnauzers! I chopped off their beards so now they’re both left with what’s more like the schnauzer equivalent of 5 o’clock shadow. Daxter’s actually had his beard almost this short in the past (kind of), but this is a first for Harry. I actually think it makes them look really sweet!

IMG_9301.jpg

Ben, however, thinks it makes them look like rats. I feel like it makes Daxter look more like a puppy again, and makes Harry look a lot younger, too. Of course, he’ll always be a crotchety old man in spirit (and personality) anyway, so there’s only so much that a haircut can do, ahahaha.

IMG_9309.jpg

I’m not sure how the two of them feel about their new haircuts though. Eating and drinking is already a much better experience for me, since less food is getting stuck in their beards and less water drippage is occurring, but they both seemed a little gloomy while I was taking these photos of them.

IMG_9289.jpg IMG_9312.jpg

Perhaps that’s just because they’re totally sick of having cameras shoved into their faces. And to be fair, they were a little on the sleepy side too.

I rest my case.

Anyway, I think it’s pretty stinkin’ adorable, but we’ll see whether or not this becomes the norm. At least I have the adorableness for now! And through me, you have it as well. You’re welcome. 😉

August Rush

Okay, let me be clear up front that I am not really going to be discussing the movie “August Rush” today, delightful though it may have been (though let’s be honest, I pretty much watched that entire movie solely for glimpses of Jonathan Rhys Meyers). No, this is more of an homage to the general feeling I have today which is along the lines of:

HOLY CRAP IT’S AUGUST?!?!?!!!??

This year has been flying by. I know how cliche that must sound for me to say (write?) out loud, but it’s true! I cannot believe that the year is already almost 3/4 of the way done. They say time flies when you’re having fun so… way to go, 2012! August is a particularly important milestone month for me because lots of stuff tends to happen to me in August. Par example, in August of 2010 I started this blog. And last August, I started my new (day)job. The fact that yet another anniversary is about to pass for the first thing and my first anniversary is impending for the second really puts into perspective how much time has passed over this last year.

IMG_9140.jpg
Pensive Daxter is pensive. Also, I have since trimmed his ears.

I’ve mentioned before that the fact that I can easily look back on exactly what I was doing/saying/thinking/eating (heh) a year ago is one of the things that I love most about this blog. While I may not always want to remember everything, keeping this blog is like keeping a scrapbook of my life… that anyone can see at any time. Okay, so it’s not perfect, hahaha. But what can I say? I’m a bit of an emotional exhibitionist, so sharing my formative years (er, if you consider 22 – 24+ formative) with the interwebs is really okay with me. This is why I feel like I would make a really good celebrity. I just really like it when people pay attention to me. 😛

In case you were interested, by the way, here is the post from this day last year. It includes puppy pictures (look at how TINY my sister’s dog Oreo is!) as well as sushi. So clearly, not that much has actually changed.

Originally when I started thinking about the fact that a year has already passed, and I’m about to celebrate HISTG’s second birthday, I started to get a little sad. After all, I’m still not at “goal” weight. In fact, I haven’t really lost any significant weight all year. But then I smacked myself in the face (true story) and told myself to get over it. After all, who cares if I meet some arbitrary deadline? I’m still much healthier now than I was two years ago, and my relationship with my body, my weight, and myself is still growing and evolving. I am confident that I will get to place where I am truly satisfied with my weight and appearance (I hope, at least!) so I don’t need to be apologetic for it taking a little longer for me to get there than I had originally planned, right?

I don’t want to have to apologize for doing things my way, in my own time. Two years ago, did I think that I would ever get to a point where I could run in a 200-mile relay across the state of Massachussetts? Did I think that I would be able to make regular exercise part of my routine? Absolutely not! And that is progress, my friends, as I’ve said time and time again.

I’ll reiterate, just so no doubt or confusion circulates, that I do still have goals and intentions to lose more weight. You know, to find that true “happy” weight of mine, because I still am above the threshold. I still don’t completely LOVE my body right now. I would like to tone up, flatten out, and maybe drop just one more elusive size. But just because you don’t actively see it here doesn’t mean that I’m not still making an effort (even if it’s a slightly less focused effort at present moment, admittedly). It will all come in time.

I feel like in the past, I’ve spent every self-reflective, anniversary-ish post pretending to celebrate my accomplishments but in reality, I’ve been regretting the things that I wasn’t able to accomplish. “If only I had gotten my act together sooner, I’d already have long since been at my goal weight!” “I wish I hadn’t ever done X, or gone to Y, or wasted my time with Z!” Well, no more! There is absolutely no point in regretting my past – it’s what has shaped me into the (totally awesome and modest) person that I am today. Every year has brought me something new, something to grow from, something to celebrate. And I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this next one.

Filler

Oh herro. So I’m not even going to pretend like I have anything new or exciting to report to you all. After this coming weekend, it may be a different story (I’ve got The Dark Knight Rises, a yoga boat cruise, and my sister’s 30th birthday wine tour all happening!) but for now, things are pretty much same old, same old. You know, with the exception of the fact that I’m driving my mom’s sweet ride instead of my own devil car because I enjoy things like staying (relatively) sane.

So here are a few things for you to enjoy in the absence of an actual post from me:

– The engagement photos I took for my brother and his fiancee while we were in St. Maarten are all up on his photography blog! Go check ’em out!

– I posted a Daily Eats post this morning! I shall let the shock settle in for a little bit like that.

– I subscribe to one of those mail-order giftbox things where they send you a bunch of items to try out. You know, like Birchbox does for beauty products, except the one I subscribe to is called Barkbox and it’s, yep, for dog stuff! They recently sent me, among other things, a nifty little towel thing that you use to wipe down your dogs after they come in from the rain. Well, Taylor found it and thought it had a different purpose…

Hahahahahahahaha. I pretty much solely rely on Taylor for photos of the dogs now (she’s doing a 365 Photo Project just like Ben did), so here’s another one of hers for good measure:

Aaaaand that’s about all, folks. Happy Tuesday?
