Happy Powellween!

Hope everyone had a great Halloween yesterday!

This little owl finally delivered my Hogwarts letter — although she’s pretty terrible at her job, tbh, since it arrived about 19 years late. Good thing she’s so cute!

While it wasn’t technically Penny’s 1st Halloween, we did take her trick or treating for the first time, and it was so much fun! Even if she still didn’t really have any idea what was going on, or why I kept putting the hood of her costume back up every time she ripped it off.

We made it to six whole houses around the neighborhood, and by the last couple she was starting to get the idea of walking up to the door and holding out her bucket, so I’d call it a rousing success!

And while it wasn’t Penny’s first Halloween, it was her cousin Marnie’s!

So we got some more use out of Penny’s unicorn costume from last year, and the two of them together was honestly almost too much cuteness to handle.

The weather yesterday was also pretty much perfect. After so many days of wet, chilly, dreary weather, the warm, sunny, and beautiful Autumn day was such a welcome surprise!

My parents and I took advantage pre-trick-or-treating by taking Penny, Harry the lion, and Daxter the Monkey out for a nice leisurely walk.

Between Halloween, regular work stuff, and my coworker’s big event that I’m helping out at today, this week has been crazy busy. Actually, the weekend was jam-packed, too! My dad’s birthday was on Saturday, and then on Sunday, Sean and I tried to take in more Halloweeny goodness with Penny (though the event we went to was so crazy packed, we barely spent any time there at all, lol.)

Throw in a couple playdates, and things have actually been non-stop for a while! Which, of course, explains why I haven’t been back here to blog in a while, and also sadly why thus far this week I’ve only been able to work out once.

Luckily (?) the workout was a barre class taught by my friend on Monday, and it kicked my butt so hard that I’m still pathetically sore today. And these big Yelper Party events like the one I’m off to shortly tend to easily make me double my daily steps (and then some), so at least I’ll still be shaking out some of this soreness?

This weekend brings more fun and craziness with it, with Sean’s birthday, a friend’s birthday party, brunch, and then my own event on Monday night. But next week Penny and I are headed back to visit my sister, so just powering on through ’til then!

Happy November, everyone!

Mouse in the House!

Halloween is almost here! For Penny’s first Halloween last year, I was so excited to get her all dressed up and show her off, but let’s be honest: she was basically just a lump in a unicorn costume. So THIS year, as she’s old enough to walk around, enjoy the attention and take in all the hubbub, I’m really having fun with it!

Yesterday we got our first taste of Halloween goodness, as the Yelp DC office was hosting a kid’s Halloween party! So I got my little mouse all dressed up and we drove into the city so she could have her first taste of office life (and candy, hehe.)

Sean’s working on a new construction site that’s downtown as well, not too far from the Yelp offices, so he was even able to join us!

Yelp’s employee demographic skews preeeeetty young, so there actually aren’t a ton of parents working out of this office. Which means there were really only like, five kids at the party, haha. But luckily one of them was my work bestie‘s adorable daughter, so they got to bond over shared Goldfish from the snack station in the kitchen, and then went trick or treating around the office. Penny loved all the attention! She’s such a people person (wonder where she gets that from?)

Not a bad way to kick off the Halloween season, that’s for sure! I’m really looking forward to taking in more fun Halloween activities as we get closer to the actual holiday, too. Her daycare is having a little trick or treating festival tomorrow evening, and then in the weeks to come there are Mall-o-weens and Ghost Trains and all kinds of fun. I love this time of year!!!

Finally Fall!

Happy Monday, folks!

I am LIVING for the fact that it finally feels like Fall around here! It literally went from like 86 degrees and humid AF one day, to crisp and breezy the next, which certainly set us up for a fantastic weekend. I hope these temperatures stick around, because Penny’s got a whole wardrobe full of cold-weather clothing that I’ve just been dying to bust out, hehe.

Anyway, on Friday, Penny and I had a playdate with a friend at our favorite local play place, nook!

She crashed hard when we got home, and my MIL came over to spend some time with her so I was able to get some work done as well as take care of a bunch of stuff around the house that I’ve been putting off. (Slash that I’ve been waiting for Sean to take care but let’s be honest, if you want something done… hahaha.)

Then on Saturday, I woke up feeling a bit under the weather, but Sean got up to get Penny and let me sleep in. When I got up, he had made brunch for us! Waffles & bacon, yummmm.

Then after Penny’s morning nap & lunch, we headed back at Mosaic Center to hit up the Merrifield Fall Festival!

It was a pretty cute festival, with bands and lots of restaurant vendors, as well as a local vendor market and a few kid things. Penny was too young to take advantage of most of the kid activities (pumpkin painting, face painting, a little hockey area), but they did have a “Gently Loved” book sale there, so we picked up 6 new books for her for $3! Not bad.

After we came home and Penny had her (unreasonably short, IMO) second nap, she and I spent a little time outside with our new neighbors, who have a daughter just six weeks older than Penny! It’s super fun to have a little friend for her just a few doors down, plus they are really good at spending time outside (unlike me, who is a TOTAL creature of indoor comfort, haha), which has really been encouraging me to get outside with Penny even just for a bit every day. She loves walking around our little cul-de-sac with her walker toy, trying to eat rocks and leaves and stuff, heh.

Alas, when I woke up on Sunday, I was feeling even worse than I felt the morning before, and unlike on Saturday, it didn’t go away. So sadly, I spent most of the day laid up on the couch binge-watching Once Upon A Time. Penny was feeling a bit puny in the morning too, since she’s teething hardcore right now (she cut 3 new teeth at once last weekend!), but she perked up a lot after her first nap. Sean took her out for a little Daddy-daughter date around lunchtime so I could get some more rest, too, which was lovely of him, and which I totally squandered by NOT resting at all, of course. But I did get some uninterrupted chores done, and was able to feel good about the state of the house and our laundry piles by the time we all went to bed last night?

Anyway, trying to kick off this week strongly, so I headed to the gym this morning (15 minute walking/jogging warm-up and then half an hour of my weight lifting routine), and now I’ve got a bunch of work stuff to tackle before heading off to another playdate. Busy day! See you on the flipside!

My Gym & MY Gym

Man, the days are really getting away from me lately! Between work & work events, social engagements, and my constant status of “Am I getting sick again?”, time really seems to be moving faster than I’d like. I never have enough time to do everything I want!

One thing I *did* finally get around to doing though, was taking Penny to a class at the local My Gym. If you’re not familiar, it’s like a gym for kids — a play place that offers structured classes for your kiddos to help them develop various skills (and is just a lot of fun.)

My friend Anna asked if I was interested in meeting up for a class (the first one is free), and since it had actually long been on my list of things to do, my answer was a resounding YES! We also got our other friend of ours to join as well, and all of our littles had a ton of fun.

I really loved how many different activities and areas the employees at My Gym set up for the kids — they crammed a LOT of fun into the hour we were there! There was a “car wash” where they had a bubble machine going and kids rode a little toy car through a little obstacle course thing, tumbling time, swinging, and a demolition derby!

Plus some songs to kick things off, a story to wrap things up, and what they called “separation time” at the end, where they pulled out some toys and encouraged us to walk as far away from the babies as they’d let us. The goal was to get back to the check-in desk area (the kids are always still in sight), but you know Penny. Sean and I probably could have walked right out of the building and driven home and little Miss Independent wouldn’t have noticed or cared, hahahahaha.

I had so much fun with Penny at the My Gym class, and totally want to sign her up for a membership now. The only problem is that it’s more expensive than my own grown-up gym membership! Hahaha. We also were talking about doing swim lessons with her this winter, so I just gotta figure out what makes the most sense monetarily and schedule-wise. Alas, we just can’t do everything!

Speaking of the gym, my routine of working out 3 – 4 times a week was going really well (shockingly so, when you really think about how much I used to hate working out, lol)… until the plague descended and our whole household got sick, that is, and my schedule got thrown off like whoa. So I’m working on getting my motivation back up and my routine back in place — so far, I’m doing okay. The past week+ has had a lot of work commitments that have gotten in the way of me being able to go as often as I’d like, but I went yesterday and have a personal training session tomorrow, so I’m feeling optimistic about this week, at least.

August to October

My ultimate goal is still to get to the place where I am solidly working out 5 days a week and prioritize fitness as part of my daily routine, but you know, I’m still a work in progress, heh. Already I can tell you that while I may or may not have lost much weight recently (I haven’t stepped on the scale in a few weeks because I was getting a bit obsessive), I can absolutely see a difference in my strength, stamina, and endurance!

My clothes seem like they’re fitting a little better too, though while slimming down and losing body fat are obviously pleasant bonuses and additional indicators of my health improving, I’m not trying to make “weight loss” the main focus here. It just so easily leads to really negative thinking on my part — tying my self-worth to the scale, falling back into old, unsustainable habits just so I can lose weight a little faster, etc.

For now, Penny remains my biggest motivation and I’m finding it’s just the right kind of motivation. I want to model healthy habits for her, I never want her to feel the kind of self-loathing and shame that I’ve felt toward my body for so much of my life, and I just wanna, you know, keep up with her!

She gets more energetic and exhausting every day, so I gotta work to make sure she doesn’t leave me in the dust! We had another pediatric appointment to follow up on her ear infection and so she could finally get her 12 month shots, and she’s now 23 lbs, 4 oz. So, yeah, I’m gonna keep doing my arm exercises I think, hahaha.

Of Mice and Pen

Aloha! Hope everyone is having a great week so far! Ours has been really busy, pretty stressful, but overall still good. Guess those good weekend vibes have kept going into the week, because I’ve been able to mostly maintain a sense of calmness despite the fact that this week is going by suuuper quickly, and I still have lots to get done. (And in spite of the fact that my car maintenance appointment ended up turning into a $700 brake pad replacement. Wheeeeee…)

It does help that I’ve gotten to spend lots of time with the most adorable people in my life, of course!

Tuesday was a crazy busy day — work, personal training, and therapy! — but my parents and my sister-in-law came over for dinner, so I got to cuddle up with baby Marnie which was a very nice way to end the day! She’s getting so big and alert! I mean, “big” being a relative term next to our giant toddler, of course, but it’s still really fun to see her growing up. Especially now that we know firsthand how fun she’s going to become!

I had a work event last night (Wednesday), so I had planned on taking the morning off to take Penny to Cox Farms for a mommy meetup at the Fall Festival, but, alas, she had other plans…

Lol. And since she doesn’t nap when she’s at daycare, I try my best to let her catch up when she’s at home. But I still wanted to take advantage of having her with me for the day, so after she woke up (and after a snack that she shared with Daxter, of course), we packed up and headed out!

Our first stop was to Caboose Commons, the new brewery/coffee house next to Mosaic where my friend works — it’s an awesome spot that I definitely can see myself working from often in the future!

They have a super cute little seating lounge with a kid’s rocking chair that Penny was super into. Notice how much happier she is sitting in the chair than sitting in her own mother’s lap. -_-

And after our stop there, we headed to our favorite play place, nook! They have an awesome little dress up nook set up now with various costumes, and I had a lot of fun dressing Penny up like a little mouse (and a raccoon, but she didn’t like that costume as much, lol.) She loved the slide this time too, and was going down all by herself (backwards, on her stomach)!

Our fun adventures totally wiped her out, too, she was snoring in the car within minutes of me strapping her in to go home. Unfortunately, I have not in any way mastered transferring her from her carseat to her crib without waking her up, so it was a short lived nap… which made me feel justified about her long morning nap, at least.

We came home, she played for a bit on her own while I got things ready for the evening, and I got to watch her DESTROY some spaghetti & meatballs before I had to skidaddle off to my event (leaving her daddy with bath duty, gahaha.)

Today she’s back at daycare and I’m off to work at my coworker’s big party in DC for most of the day. The sad news is that means I only got about 40 minutes with her in total today, since she’ll have long been in bed by the time I get home late tonight. The good news is, according to my daycare app, she’s actually taking a nap right now! So hopefully she should be in a really good mood for her daddy when he picks her up. And, of course, I feel extremely blessed that the days when I don’t get to see much of Penny are so few and far between.

Anyway, all that being said, it’s time to get cracking with the rest of my to-do list, since I’ll be heading into DC shortly. See you guys on the flipside!
