Sushi Hour

Since “sushi” is pretty much synonymous with the word “happy” in my eyes, I think this post title totally works. So it’s probably no surprise then that after last night’s third DC blogger monthly meetup I am the sushiest gal around.

Heaven.

I met up with Jess, Carly, Claire, Catrina, and Amy at Cafe Asia in Rosslyn for happy hour last night!

I tried to ration out my eating properly throughout the day since I know I just can’t help myself when it comes to sushi. Turns out that was a very good call…

I had never been there before, but Cafe Asia’s happy hour is pretty fantastic. $2.50 draft beers and $3 apps! The space was really big too, so it was easy to move from the bar to a table when we realized there would be just six of us.

After we were seated, we settled in for the main event. I decided that it would be a good idea to eat an entire avocado for dinner, so I started with the following “salad”:

There’s some shredded cucumber and wakame buried under there too, I promise.

Before moving onto this deliciousness:

Claire had the fancy dragon roll on the right as well as the tuna roll, and I demolished the salmon, eel & avocado, and “Cafe Asia” roll on the left. I wasn’t kidding about the amount of avocado I consumed today. Totally counts as a “green”, right?

And as if my day wasn’t sushi-tastic enough, LivingSocial had a deal today for 50% off of sushi at Maneki Neko in Falls Church! I’ve always considered them to be “the other” when it comes to FC sushi (my loyalty lies with Koi Koi now and forever!) but hey, with a deal this good I’m definitely willing to broaden my horizons!

What’s your sushi stance? I find it’s a very polarizing cuisine: people either love it or hate it. It’s clearly no secret that I’m part of the former category, but some of you might be surprised to hear that Steve really doesn’t like it! I’ve finally gotten him to the point where he’s at least willing to take me to sushi restaurants though (where he’ll order the teriyaki chicken, haha), so I guess I can’t really complain. Doesn’t stop me from trying to force him to eat it anyway though. LIKE IT. LIKE IT, I SAY!

Special Delivery

Good news, everybody! The FAA furlough seems to have reached some sort of agreement, temporary or not, so it looks like I’ll be able to start my new job after all! Huzzah! Let’s celebrate with some on-the-parents sushi, shall we? Oh wait, I already did.

IMG_0502.jpg

My parents and I met up with some family friends for lunch yesterday at Hoang’s. The sushi combo I got for lunch was really good, though still not quite as amazing as my precious Koi Koi sushi. But hey, I’m biased.

IMG_0504.jpg

Thanks for venturing down to join us for lunch, Uncle Gil & Aunt Linda!

IMG_0495.jpg
IMG_0503.jpg

The lunch combo consisted of miso soup, a california roll, a salmon roll, and an eel & avocado roll – what a deal, eh?

IMG_0500.jpg

My mom also gave me a taste of her shrimp pad thai. Thanks mom!

IMG_0498.jpg

You can see where I get my adorableness, huh? Bahaha.

So I have been the recipient of some exciting deliveries as of late. First up, my order of the amazingly fantabulous Mama Pea‘s new cookbook finally arrived!

IMG_0447.jpg

If you’ve read her blog at all, you already know what a hilarious writer and great mom she is (and she and her adorable family reside in my dad’s hometown of Salem, OR!) and her cookbook channels that exact same energy. It’s full of witty anecdotes and fun family photos, as well as (duh) delicious vegan recipes. I haven’t even bothered making any of the items in the book yet, I’ve just been poring over the sidebars and general hilarity – but I can’t wait to!

The other special delivery that I was super-psyched to discover on my doorstep? Observe:

In case you didn’t see my tweets about it yesterday, JALAPENO POPCHIPS HAVE ARRIVED!!!

IMG_0509.jpg
IMG_0511.jpg

I’ve been waiting on these babies since hearing about the impending flavor at the Fitness & Health Bloggers Conference I attended. I am so excited! Jalapeno is my favorite flavor of Kettle Chip, and I was thrilled to hear that my beloved Popchips would be following the trend. And so after doing a little happy dance and deafening my roommates upon discovering the basket on my doorstep, the tasting commenced:

IMG_0512.jpg

I love ’em! They are definitely spicy, so be aware of that, but the zing is delicious. They’re not *quite* as flavorful as their Kettle Chip counterparts, but they probably have a lot less salt which I guess would be a contributing factor (but probably makes them better for you overall.) Salt & Vinger flavored Popchips might have to watch out… a new contender for favorite is on the move!

Happy Friday, folks!

(Temporary) Freedom

I wasn’t really sure how I was supposed to follow up yesterday’s trifecta of awesome. After all, having a hallelujah-Monday that consisted of entering a new decade of weight loss, a career move AND a new haircut (not necessarily in that order of importance) is hard to do!

And then I woke up to a vomiting dog and menstrual cramps (sorry to my 4.2 male readers, haha) and realized that maybe I’m not supposed to try to outdo it. But, while I may not be starting off this day with quite the same pizazz as yesterday, it is still a day where I got to sleep in until 9 AM (that is late for me these days!) because I’m taking some “me time” before starting my new job. Partly by choice, and partly because my new job’s start date is affected by the current government furlough of the FAA. Sooooo… it may end up being a little MORE me time than originally planned. Oh well. I love me so, it’ll be okay. Just a good life lesson in frugality over the next month perhaps.

Another good thing? I had an awesome bowl of overnight oats waiting for me in the fridge this morning (raw oats, chia seeds, coconut, almond milk, empty — sob — jar of Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter.) So, all is not lost.

Plus, the sister and her hubs took Ben, Taylor and me out for sushi (what else?) last night to thank us for puppysitting this past week! Everybody’s a winner!

Day 211 - Puppy Handling
Photos by Ben Powell

Pre-sushi, Ben and I attempted to take some photos of Oreo for my sister while he’s still in his supercute puppy phase. Unfortunately, being in his supercute puppy phase means he is a terrible photography subject. He doesn’t know how to “stay” yet, so it was basically 20 minutes of me wrestling him into place and then trying to jump out of the picture as quickly as possible. So it was kind of impossible to get any decent shots of the three dogs together, but he did get some pretty great ones of Oreo on his own (after editing my limbs out of the pictures, haha.) Observe!

Sufficiently pick-me-uppish? 😉

Don’t worry, I have plans to actually be productive during my days of (temporary) freedom — including that post on blogging that I’ve been promising for a while now!

Living Healthy

Healthy living means a lot of things.

IMG_0194.jpg

It means salted edamame.

IMG_0193.jpg

It means tofu that is, yes, smothered in sauce.

IMG_0195.jpg

It means good-for-you sushi…

IMG_0198.jpg

…and not-so-good-for-you sushi, too.

IMG_0196.jpg

Hehehe.

IMG_0197.jpg

But hey, it’s okay. After all, you’re sharing with a friend!

Recycled photo of Ania and me at the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade

After furnishing my pantry with some supplies from Trader Joe’s yesterday, Ania and I had a decadent sushi dinner at Koi Koi — where else? The cuisine, company, and conversation was just what I needed. Healthy living does, after all, extend beyond what we put in our mouths and do with our muscles! Mental and emotional wellbeing is just as, if not more, important than physical health (and failure to attend to all of the above inevitably results in a rapid degeneration of general wellness, as I know all too well.)

Unhealthy: physically, emotionally, mentally.

Getting there…

Between the evening and yesterday morning’s weigh-in, this week has kicked off surprisingly well! So I’m going to take my good mood (180-degrees from last week’s Gloomy Gussery) and do something potentially frightful:

Ask me anything.

No, really! This is your opportunity to ask any questions you might have for me regarding my journey, my methods, my habits, my food, my past… heck, even the dogs are fair game! I figure it’s about time I compile a good old-fashioned Q&A/FAQ page anyway, so this is where I’ll start. Not comfortable leaving your question in the comments? Feel free to DM me on Twitter or email me at [email protected] instead.

Ahhh, true pandering to my conceited and self-centered nature at last. 😉 Knock yourselves out! This evening I’ll be auditing a culinary school class at a local institution. I’m really excited, so stay tuned for a report on that. Hopefully the chef won’t mind me bringing my camera…!
